{"id":610,"date":"2023-06-24T01:10:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-24T01:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/?p=610"},"modified":"2023-06-28T22:14:21","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T22:14:21","slug":"russia-bans-world-wildlife-fund-accusing-the-environmental-group-of-undermining-arctic-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/index.php\/2023\/06\/24\/russia-bans-world-wildlife-fund-accusing-the-environmental-group-of-undermining-arctic-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia bans World Wildlife Fund, accusing the environmental group of undermining Arctic development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Russia\u2019s Prosectuor General has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/genprocrf\/2754\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outlawed<\/a>&nbsp;the local operations of the World Wildlife Fund, designating the group as an \u201cundesirable organization\u201d on the grounds that it poses a threat to Russia\u2019s national security:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<cite>Under the pretext of preserving the environment, WWF carries out activities aimed at preventing the implementation of the country\u2019s policies for the industrial development of the Arctic and natural resources in [Russia\u2019s] subarctic territories, and developing and legitimizing restrictions that could serve as the basis for shifting the Northern Sea Route into the U.S. exclusive economic zone.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Russian officials also accuse WWF of creating a network of \u201cpuppet nonprofits\u201d designed to collect data about the environmental situation across the country in order to publish \u201cbiased\u201d assessments intended deny Russian energy companies their supposedly rightful \u201cgreen status\u201d and \u201cshackle\u201d future economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prosecutor General also accuses WWF of providing \u201cmaterial and methodological support\u201d to multiple designated \u201cforeign agents,\u201d including Friends of the Baltic and Sakhalin Environmental Watch. Citing misdemeanor charges against members of these groups for participating in \u201cunsanctioned mass protests,\u201d the authorities argue that WWF thereby \u201cmeddled in Russia\u2019s domestic affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2023, Russia\u2019s Justice Ministry designated WWF as a \u201cforeign agent,\u201d despite the fact that the World Wildlife Fund is not a Russian organization.
