{"id":3464,"date":"2025-09-25T00:08:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T22:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/?p=3464"},"modified":"2025-10-28T23:32:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T21:32:24","slug":"observers-and-the-arctic-council-chairship-met-to-enhance-engagement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/index.php\/2025\/09\/25\/observers-and-the-arctic-council-chairship-met-to-enhance-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"Observers and the Arctic Council Chairship met to Enhance Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Foreign Ministry of Poland hosted the 2025 edition of the Warsaw Format Meeting on 9 September, bringing together representatives from nearly all non-Arctic Observer States alongside representatives of the European Union and the Kingdom of Denmark\u2019s Arctic Council Chairship, including Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Warsaw Format was first convened in 2010, during the Kingdom of Denmark\u2019s first Chairship of the Arctic Council. Fifteen years later, it continues to serve as a venue for constructive dialogue between Observer States and the Chairship of the Arctic Council. It offers a distinct platform for candid dialogue, complementing the Council\u2019s formal structures with a flexible and inclusive setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Many thanks to Poland for hosting the Warsaw format meeting, which is making it possible to strengthen cooperation between the Observer States and the Council,&#8221; said Kenneth H\u00f8egh, Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials, who underscored the importance of active engagement by Observer States. &#8220;This is greatly appreciated as Observers make significant contributions to the work of the Arctic Council through knowledge, partnerships and resources.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arctic-council.org\/site\/assets\/files\/16134\/image_15.720x0.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Torsten Nielsen, Senior Arctic Official for the Kingdom of Denmark (right) and Kenneth H\u00f8egh, Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials (middle)<br>\u00a9 Anja Salo \/ Arctic Council Secretariat<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The meeting included four thematic presentations by experts from the Arctic Council:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sara Olsvig, Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council and Head of Delegation to the Arctic Council, delivered a keynote address on health and wellbeing of Arctic communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lars Kullerud, President of the University of the Arctic (UArctic), highlighted the importance of circumpolar scientific collaboration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gosia Smieszek-Rice, Deputy Secretary at the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme, presented the Working Group&#8217;s latest Climate Change Update, highlighting tipping points and global-regional stakes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benjamin Strong, Chair of the Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response Working Group, highlighted the importance of coordinated emergency responses in the face of growing environmental and human risks &#8211; from wildfires to vulnerable infrastructure to medical emergencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Warsaw Format provided Observers with a valuable platform to engage meaningfully with these and other crucial issues, while also offering an opportunity to share their perspectives on Arctic cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arctic-council.org\/site\/assets\/files\/16132\/warsaw_format_meeting_2025_4-1.720x0.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Piotr Rychlik, Ambassador for Arctic and Antarctic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland and Marcin Bosacki, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Poland.<br>\u00a9 Indra Sebastian \/ MFA Poland<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Observers bring their own unique expertise to the work of the Arctic Council, and their contributions at the Working Group level were a main point of discussion at the Warsaw Format Meeting. Representatives from all six of the Arctic Council Working Groups provided updates on the status of their work and on-going projects, including opportunities for enhanced cooperation.
