{"id":3389,"date":"2025-08-17T02:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T00:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/?p=3389"},"modified":"2025-08-21T23:49:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T21:49:43","slug":"nato-steps-up-presence-near-russias-arctic-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/index.php\/2025\/08\/17\/nato-steps-up-presence-near-russias-arctic-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO steps up presence near Russia\u2019s Arctic coast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NATO allies held naval drills off Norway to bolster their Arctic presence near Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Four NATO members have conducted naval exercises in the Arctic waters as part of a broader deployment to patrol the High North, the alliance\u2019s maritime command announced on social media on Monday.<\/strong> Ships from the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and Germany took part in manoeuvres off Norway\u2019s northern coast and the High North, aimed at \u201cflexing the Alliance\u2019s ability to work together,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NATO_MARCOM\/status\/1952323760343671122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NATO\u2019s Allied Maritime Command<\/a> (MARCOM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drills form part of a broader deployment announced last week amid mounting tensions between NATO and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation also aims to secure sea lanes and monitor undersea activity in the Arctic region, a strategically important area home to critical infrastructure, including undersea cables connecting mainland Europe to Norway\u2019s Svalbard archipelago. It remains unclear whether the submarines are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed, or where they have been sent.
