That is evidently not going to be the lowest in the satellite era!<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"Mar-08\"><\/a><strong>[Edit \u2013 March 8th]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Tom has already mentioned below, JAXA extent has declined significantly since the (so far!) peak extent of  14.12 million km\u00b2 on both the 2nd and 3rd of March:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/JAXA-Extent-20230307.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/JAXA-Extent-20230307-1024x512-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/JAXA-Extent-20230307-1024x512-1.png 1024w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/JAXA-Extent-20230307-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/JAXA-Extent-20230307-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/JAXA-Extent-20230307.png 1341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s too soon to be certain of course, but we certainly now have a good candidate for the 2023 maximum JAXA extent.<\/p>\n<p>NSIDC 5 day averaged extent is still increasing, but let\u2019s see what this afternoon\u2019s update (UTC) reveals\u2026<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Charctic-2023-03-07.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"746\" height=\"740\" src=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Charctic-2023-03-07.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Charctic-2023-03-07.png 746w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Charctic-2023-03-07-300x298.png 300w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Charctic-2023-03-07-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Which is a decrease of 0.001 million km\u00b2 from March 6th, leaving a current NSIDC maximum extent of 14.62  million km\u00b2!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, for the moment at least, AWI\u2019s \u201chigh resolution\u201d AMSR2 extent looks a lot less convincing than JAXA\u2019s:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AWI-AMSR2-2023-03-08.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AWI-AMSR2-2023-03-08-1024x540-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AWI-AMSR2-2023-03-08-1024x540-1.png 1024w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AWI-AMSR2-2023-03-08-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AWI-AMSR2-2023-03-08-768x405.png 768w, https:\/\/greatwhitecon.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AWI-AMSR2-2023-03-08.png 1422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p><a name=\"Mar-11\"><\/a><strong>[Edit \u2013 March 11th]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NSIDC Arctic sea ice extent took a tumble yesterday, so with only mild trepidation I\u2019m calling the 2023 maximum extent.
