{"id":2294,"date":"2024-10-13T01:50:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-12T23:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/?p=2294"},"modified":"2024-10-14T23:56:59","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T21:56:59","slug":"imo-designates-canadian-and-norwegian-arctic-as-new-emission-control-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/index.php\/2024\/10\/13\/imo-designates-canadian-and-norwegian-arctic-as-new-emission-control-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"IMO designates Canadian and Norwegian Arctic as new Emission Control Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During the 82nd session of the International Maritime Organization\u2019s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82), held from September 30 to October 4, 2024, significant amendments to MARPOL Annex VI were adopted, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/shipping-news\/imo-designates-canadian-arctic-norwegian-sea-as-new-emission-control-areas\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=imo-designates-canadian-arctic-norwegian-sea-as-new-emission-control-areas\">designating<\/a> the Canadian Arctic and Norwegian Sea as Emission Control Areas (ECAs). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMO-meetings_banner_MEPC_EN-1024x302.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMO-meetings_banner_MEPC_EN-1024x302.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMO-meetings_banner_MEPC_EN-300x89.jpg 300w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMO-meetings_banner_MEPC_EN-768x227.jpg 768w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMO-meetings_banner_MEPC_EN-1536x453.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMO-meetings_banner_MEPC_EN-2048x604.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These amendments, effective March 1, 2026, impose stricter NOx, SOx, and PM emission limits on vessels operating in these areas to improve air quality and protect marine ecosystems. Ships in these ECAs must either use low-sulfur fuels (0.10% m\/m or less) or adopt alternative emission-reduction technologies. Newer vessels will also be required to meet NOx Tier III standards.
