{"id":2158,"date":"2024-09-05T09:26:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T07:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/?p=2158"},"modified":"2024-09-05T07:31:49","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T05:31:49","slug":"carbon-brief-joins-scientists-live-at-the-uks-arctic-research-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/index.php\/2024\/09\/05\/carbon-brief-joins-scientists-live-at-the-uks-arctic-research-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbon Brief joins scientists live at the UK\u2019s Arctic Research Station"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The northernmost human settlement in the world,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.visitsvalbard.com\/visitor-information\/destinations\/ny-alesund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ny-\u00c5lesund<\/a>, has for more than 30 years hosted the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/polar-operations\/sites-and-facilities\/facility\/ny-alesund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK\u2019s Arctic Research Station<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 the nation\u2019s only permanent infrastructure near the Earth\u2019s northern pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"531\" src=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/svalbard-hero-1550x804-1-1024x531.webp\" alt=\"Panellists for Carbon Brief's webinar live at the UK\u2019s Arctic Research Station in Svalbard, Norway.\" class=\"wp-image-2159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/svalbard-hero-1550x804-1-1024x531.webp 1024w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/svalbard-hero-1550x804-1-300x156.webp 300w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/svalbard-hero-1550x804-1-768x398.webp 768w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/svalbard-hero-1550x804-1-1536x797.webp 1536w, https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/svalbard-hero-1550x804-1.webp 1550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Panellists for Carbon Brief&#8217;s webinar live at the UK\u2019s Arctic Research Station in Svalbard, Norway.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Located on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard \u2013 one of the most&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/debriefed-30-august-2024-sea-level-rise-crisis-african-floods-studying-climate-change-in-svalbard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rapidly warming<\/a>&nbsp;places on the planet \u2013 the station acts as a base for UK scientists studying how climate change is affecting the Arctic\u2019s ice, ocean, ecosystems and atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, Carbon Brief joined representatives from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Antarctic Survey<\/a>&nbsp;(BAS) and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/councils\/nerc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natural Environment Research Council<\/a>&nbsp;(NERC), which manage and fund the station, respectively, to host an online webinar live from Ny-\u00c5lesund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The speakers explained more about the research that climate scientists are conducting in the Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also answered a broad range of questions on everything from how people living at the station spend their evenings to the kinds of archaeological finds that have been unearthed from melting glacier ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The webinar was moderated by Carbon Brief\u2019s associate editor,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/author\/daisydunne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daisy Dunne<\/a>, and featured:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/profile\/dorose14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dorothea Moser<\/a>, an ice cores scientist at BAS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/profile\/henrge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Henry Burgess<\/a>, head of the NERC Arctic Office<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A recording of the webinar (below) is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1-Dt-tAnWpg?si=FBWthueQ115OfnWk\" title=\"\">available <\/a>to watch on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burgess opened the webinar by explaining the extent to which climate change is affecting Ny-\u00c5lesund, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Arctic is changing and warming much much more quickly than the rest of the globe. The figures in Svalbard are particularly stark. If the Arctic as a whole is warming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/the-arctic-has-warmed-nearly-four-times-faster-than-the-global-average\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four times more quickly<\/a>&nbsp;than the rest of the globe, in this part of Svalbard, over the last past 50 years\u2026winter temperatures [have become] almost 7.5C warmer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Moser\u2019s research is centred on how increasing winter rainfall in the Arctic could be affecting the efficacy of ice cores, which scientists use to study&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/interactive.carbonbrief.org\/how-proxy-data-reveals-climate-of-earths-distant-past\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earth\u2019s past climate<\/a>.
