This is a region is of high strategic importance for both NATO and Russia, the two countries’ defence ministers underline as they sign an agreement on the North Atlantic and Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Letter of Intent <\/a>signed this week by Norway\u2019s Bj\u00f8rn Arild Gram and Denmark\u2019s Troels Lund Poulsen includes a stronger bilateral cooperation on education and training, drones and air defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt will contribute to enhanced Norwegian, Nordic and allied security,\u201d Gram says in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He highlights the importance of cooperation in the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is especially important for Norway to cooperate more closely with Denmark on our areas of responsibility in the North Atlantic and Arctic,\u201d Gram underlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese are areas of strategic interest for both NATO and Russia,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two neighbouring Nordic countries have many of the same kind of military hardware, including Leopard-2 tanks, F-35 fighter jets and SEAHAWK helicopters, something that facilitates joint training and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oslo and Copenhagen now also intend to cooperate about air defence and surveillance. Both countries are in the process of acquiring more air defence systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement reads that the countries will \u201clook into ways of cooperation on enhanced situational awareness in areas of common interest.\u201d They will also \u201cinvestigate options for further cooperation and interoperability on maritime capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two countries also reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDenmark and Norway will continuously support Ukraine\u2019s efforts in areas of assistance, including funding donations of military equipment, training and political backing,\u201d the document reads. The two countries will also consider support to the Ukrainian defence industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bilateral agreement comes amid a major strengthening of defence cooperation across the Nordic region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to strengthen our collective, regional and bilateral cooperation. With Finland and Sweden in NATO the Nordic defence cooperation is developed. At the same time it is important also to strengthen trilateral and bilateral cooperation between Nordic allies,\u201d Norway\u2019s Defence Minister Bj\u00f8rn Arild Gram says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
