{"id":1708,"date":"2024-04-19T02:24:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T02:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/?p=1708"},"modified":"2024-04-21T20:34:01","modified_gmt":"2024-04-21T20:34:01","slug":"it-is-a-the-best-power-shift-from-denmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcticwatch.info\/index.php\/2024\/04\/19\/it-is-a-the-best-power-shift-from-denmark\/","title":{"rendered":"It Is A The Best Power Shift from Denmark"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Greenland is stepping into the next decade, claiming space and more independence. \u201cOur voice should be the most important one. \u201cNothing about us without us is\u201d a power shift from Denmark,\u201d says Aaja Chemnitz, Member of the Danish Folketing (MP) for Greenland.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, the Government of Greenland presented its first Foreign, Security, and Defense Strategy 2024 &#8211; 2033. Titled &#8216;Greenland in the World &#8211; Nothing about us without us,&#8217; the strategy aims to form stronger ties with Arctic North America and hold a leading role in the Arctic Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe foreign security and defense policy for the next 10 years addresses the needs and concerns of the Arctic people,\u201d says Kenneth H\u00f8egh, Head of Greenlands Representation to the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He calls the strategy a testament to the values, culture, and goals of Greenland, and relations with other countries with democracy and human rights are at the core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The non-negotiable demand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Also at the core of the strategy is Greenland\u2019s non-negotiable demand, motto, and message; \u201cNothing about us without us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we say that, we really mean it,\u201d says Aaja Chemnitz, a Member of the Danish Folketing (MP) representing Greenland and Chair of Arctic Parliamentarians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Nothing about us without us&#8221; is a power shift from DenmarkAaja Chemnitz<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with H\u00f8egh, she presented Greenland\u2019s new Arctic strategy at the Arctic Encounter Symposium in Anchorage, Alaska, this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A power shift<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemnitz starts with a clarification that Denmark is only a part of the Arctic through Greenland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we say \u201cnothing about us without us\u201d it means that someone needs to give away power. It is a power shift in many ways. Until now, Denmark has handled Greenland\u2019s security policy and foreign affairs and has had the formal responsibility. But it is important for us to be more independent in Greenland and to make sure that we involve indigenous communities,\u201d says the Greenlandic politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat does this policy mean to the people of Greenland?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow we have a clear policy on what we want long term. &#8216;Nothing about us without us&#8217; is making sure that we have a say on everything that has to do with Greenland in the parliament,\u201d Chemnitz tells High North News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highnorthnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/media_image\/public\/2024-04\/Aaja%20Chemnitz%20Larsen%20og%20Kenneth%20H%C3%B8egh%20%285%29.JPG?itok=rcmQBtzE\" alt=\"Aaja Chemnitz og Kenneth H\u00f8egh\" title=\"In February the Government of Greenland presented its Foreign, Security, and Defense Strategy 2024 - 2033. (Photo: Trine Jonassen)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most important voice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been a lot of attention on Greenland in the last few years, with former US president Donald Trump (R) wanting to buy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is very important for us to be able to say that this is not a decision for Denmark. The future of Greenland should be decided by Greenland. &nbsp;It is about making sure that we have our own strong voice. And our voice should be the most important one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis power shift, is it a new attitude towards Denmark?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is not something that happened overnight. This has been going on for many years. And now the Danish government is depending upon the voices from Greenland. This is based on many years of work trying to engage and really letting the Danish parliament understand that Greenland has a voice of its own, and they want to be considered much more than what we have been used to,\u201d says Chemnitz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are still sometimes seeing that although we are being involved, they end up making different decisions. It is a work in progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highnorthnews.com\/en\/greenland-new-arctic-strategy-defense-diplomacy-and-peace\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broad consensus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemnitz says that there is a broad political consensus for the Arctic strategy in the Danish Folketing and praises the parliament for waiting for Greenland\u2019s strategy before finishing their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Kingdom of Denmark has been without an Arctic strategy since the last one expired in 2021 while waiting for Greenland to publish their foreign policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt shows that we stand together when we talk about foreign affairs and security. It is very important to speak with one strong voice when it comes to Arctic matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though several Arctic regions practice self-rule, it is often the norm that decisions about the North are made in the South. As a representative for Greenland in the Danish parliament for nine years, Chemnitz knows this too well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur motto is something that other Arctic states can learn from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>North American regions face many of the same opportunities and challengesKenneth H\u00f8egh<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closer ties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemnitz says that it makes sense to develop a close collaboration with North America, as the people and communites has a lot in common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why the government of Greenland &#8211; Naalakkersuisut &#8211; is proposing an Arctic North American Forum to strengthen ties with indigenous leadership and elected assemblies in Nunavut, Nunavik, the Northwest Territories and Yukon in Canada and their counterparts in Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenneth H\u00f8egh agrees that this makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNorth American regions, despite differences, face many of the same opportunities and challenges. We see great potential for connecting the regions further for our mutual benefit\u201d, says H\u00f8egh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A seat at the table<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And as a part of Greenland\u2019s strive for more independence they also work towards their own membership of the Nordic Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highnorthnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/media_image\/public\/2023-11\/Illulissat_Lisa%20Ouellette.jpg?itok=T7HEzFIm\" alt=\"\" title=\"N\u00e5 er det vedtatt at Gr\u00f8nland skal tiltre Parisavtalen og utarbeide en nasjonal klimastrategi. We also wish to have a seat at the Arctic Council table when Denmark takes over chairship after Norway in 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat would you say triggered the shift into \u201cnothing with us without us\u201d? I heard it first time in Iceland a couple of years ago.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, it was about the power shift between Greenland and Denmark.
