During the 82nd session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82), held from September 30 to October 4, 2024, significant amendments to MARPOL Annex VI were adopted, designating the Canadian Arctic and Norwegian Sea as Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

These amendments, effective March 1, 2026, impose stricter NOx, SOx, and PM emission limits on vessels operating in these areas to improve air quality and protect marine ecosystems. Ships in these ECAs must either use low-sulfur fuels (0.10% m/m or less) or adopt alternative emission-reduction technologies. Newer vessels will also be required to meet NOx Tier III standards. Additionally, the IMO designated the Nusa Penida and Gili Matra Islands in the Lombok Strait as Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs), recognizing their ecological and cultural significance amid increasing international shipping traffic.
