Xin Xin Hai 1

Two Chinese container ships, Xin Xin Hai 1 and Xin Xin Hai 2, are navigating the Arctic using Russia’s Northern Sea Route to connect China with Europe, aiming to bypass the Red Sea and Cape of Good Hope. Xin Xin Hai 1, with a 21,279 DWT capacity, departed from Taicang on July 5 and is currently escorted by the nuclear icebreaker Sibir. Xin Xin Hai 2, a larger vessel with a 29,008 DWT capacity, left Rizhao in mid-July and is heading towards the Bering Strait. Both ships will reach Arkhangelsk in northwest Russia before proceeding to Baltic ports. The New New Shipping Line, which operates these vessels, began Arctic operations last summer and plans to expand its activities. Panamax container ships, including Flying Fish 1, SFT Turkey, and SFT Egypt, are also set to use the route, marking a significant increase in traffic.
